Welcome to our FAQ sanctuary. We’ve answered our most common questions below to ensure your upcoming Zen Head experience is as seamless and restorative as possible.
What exactly is a "head spa" compared to a
regular scalp massage?
Think of a regular massage as a "quick reset,"
while a head spa is a total system overhaul. We use specialized Japanese
equipment—like our circular water halo—combined with microscopic scalp
analysis, steam therapy, and deep-tissue techniques that target the 20+
pressure points in the head. It’s as much about scalp health and hair growth as
it is about deep relaxation.
How long does a typical session last?
A typical Zen Signature head spa session lasts 60
minutes, followed by up to 30 minutes of intentional downtime so you never feel
rushed to jump back into the real world. If you choose to enhance your
experience with a Glow Facial or O2 Facial, please plan for an
additional 30 minutes of treatment time. This schedule ensures we have plenty
of room for your initial scalp analysis, the multi-step detox, and your choice
of finishing dry.
What’s the difference between the Glow Facial and the O2 Lift
Facial?
The Glow Facial is all about replenishing and restoring
your skin’s natural moisture barrier. It uses a deeply nourishing blend of
ingredients to soothe and revitalize dehydrated skin. It is perfect for all
skin types, but especially those feeling seasonal dryness or anyone wanting
that soft, supple, lit-from-within radiance.
The O2 Lift Facial is a luxurious breath of fresh air for
your skin. It works by infusing oxygen, plant-derived stem cells, peptides, and
a high concentration of enzymatic botanicals directly into the skin. This
process supports natural circulation and cell turnover, leaving your complexion
looking luminous, plumped, and instantly rejuvenated.
Is it safe for color-treated hair or extensions?
- Color-Treated: Yes! We use
gentle, sulfate-free products. However, we recommend waiting at least 72
hours after a fresh color service to ensure your cuticles have fully
closed and the color has "set."
- Extensions: We can work with
certain types of extensions, but please let us know when booking! We
adjust our massage technique to be extra gentle around bonds or tapes to
ensure nothing is tugged or loosened.
Can I get a head spa treatment if I’m pregnant?
Absolutely! We love pampering moms-to-be and we take
extra care to ensure you are comfortable.
Do you do head spas for men?
The answer is a resounding yes! Scalp health, skin care,
and deep relaxation aren’t gendered. Whether you’re looking to tackle a dry
scalp, want a deep-cleansing facial, or just need to hit the mute button on a
stressful week, our suites are for everyone.
Can I book a session if I have a sensitive scalp or skin
conditions?
Yes. Because we perform a scalp analysis at the start of
every session, as well as ask questions on the intake form, we can customize
the products we use. If you have psoriasis, eczema, or a sensitive scalp, we
use ultra-calming ingredients to soothe inflammation rather than irritate it.
Should I come with clean or dirty hair?
Come as you are! In fact, "second-day" or
slightly dirty hair is often best. The first step of our process is a deep,
detoxifying cleanse, so there is no need to wash your hair right before you
arrive. Just avoid using heavy styling products (like gels or extreme-hold
sprays) the day of your appointment so our treatments can reach your scalp
easily.
Should I come with makeup on or not?
For the most relaxing and effective experience, we kindly
ask that you arrive with minimal to no makeup around your eye area.
Since your treatment includes a comforting heated eye mask, steam, and a gentle
face massage, cosmetics will inevitably run, leading to the dreaded
"raccoon eyes." Skip the worry and let your skin fully breathe during
your Zen moment!
I’ve recently had Botox. Can I still come in for a head
spa and facial?
If you’ve recently refreshed with Botox or fillers,
please wait at least 14 days before visiting us for a head spa or facial. Our
treatments involve steam and massage, which increase blood flow and can cause
“migration”—moving your Botox into unintended muscles before it has fully
settled.
Will I leave with wet hair?
We want your transition back to the real world to be as
seamless as your treatment. After a soothing final rinse, you can choose to Zen
Out under our stationary dryer with a warm tea and a moment of meditation,
or opt for the DIY approach using the professional blow dryers provided
in each private room. Whichever you prefer, you'll leave feeling completely
refreshed and ready for your next adventure—or a well-deserved nap!
Do I need to bring anything with me?
Just yourself! If you wear contact lenses, some guests
find it more comfortable to wear glasses or bring a lens case, as you’ll be
closing your eyes for a long, blissful stretch of time.
Why do I need to fill out the intake/consent form?
We promise it’s not just paperwork! This form is the
roadmap to your safest, most personalized experience. By understanding your
allergies, hair/skin history, and goals before we even begin, we can ensure
every drop of product and every minute of treatment is tailored exactly to what
your scalp needs.
Plus, these forms act as a guide for you, too—providing
essential details and need-to-knows so you feel fully prepared and relaxed the
moment you step through our doors.
What exactly is a salon studio?
A salon studio (sometimes called a salon suite) is a
modern, collaborative workspace where multiple independent beauty
professionals—from hair stylists and estheticians to head spa specialists—operate
their own separate businesses under one roof. Our Leawood location can be found
inside Image Studios, and our Parkville location is inside Elevate Salon
Studios.
Is there a private space for the treatment?
Yes! Whether you are visiting us in Parkville or Leawood,
your privacy is our priority. Our Parkville location features a tucked-away,
one-room suite for total stillness, and our Leawood location offers two private
suites conveniently located just down the hall from one another. Each of our
spaces is designed as a dedicated "quiet zone," allowing you to fully
unplug and enjoy your treatment without outside distractions.
Can we book for two or more people at the same time?
Yes, we love hosting friends! Our ability to accommodate
simultaneous appointments depends on which location you visit:
- In Leawood: We can
accommodate two guests at the same time. While our suites are private and
located just down the hall from one another to ensure a quiet experience,
you can both enjoy your treatments in the same time slot. For groups
larger than two, we can treat two guests while the others relax in the
beautiful Image Studios lounge or join a friend in their treatment room in
a comfortable chair.
- In Parkville: Since we
currently have one private suite at our Elevate Studios location, we would
love to see you and a friend back-to-back. You can enjoy your treatments
one after the other, making it a relaxing "tag-team" spa morning
or afternoon!
How can I get these results at home?
We exclusively use Surface Hair and Image
Skincare in our treatments because of their incredible results, and we keep
them in stock just for you! Because our providers are often deep in a treatment
with another guest, we are only able to process product purchases during your
scheduled appointment time. Feel free to ask your provider for a personalized
recommendation at the end of your session so you can take the professional
experience home with you!
How often should I receive a scalp treatment?
The ideal frequency for a professional scalp treatment
depends entirely on your needs, but once a month is excellent for maintaining a
healthy, balanced scalp and promoting hair growth.
I’ve never had a scalp treatment before. What should I
expect?
To make your first head spa
session as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, please review these steps and
notes. This information will help you prepare for the treatment and
know exactly what to expect during your time with us.
The Welcome &
Consultation
Intake: Your experience will
begin with a brief consultation. Your provider will discuss your specific hair
and scalp concerns, like dryness, oiliness, tension, or stress levels, to
tailor the treatment and product selection to your needs. Your
provider will step out to allow you to undress to your comfort level and
put on the spa wrap.
Scalp Analysis: A key part
of the Zen Signature is the scalp analysis. Your provider
will use a handheld microscope to show you a close-up view of your scalp's
condition, helping you understand your specific needs before and after the treatment.
The Deep De-Stressing
Experience
The core
of the treatment is a sensory-rich, deeply relaxing experience
performed while you are comfortably lying down:
Aromatherapy & Sensory
Relaxation: The session begins with aromatherapy to help you relax. A
heated eye mask will be applied, and you'll be enveloped in a calming
atmosphere with soothing music.
Scalp Cleansing & Detox:
Your provider will perform a meticulous double cleansing and exfoliation to
remove buildup, excess oil, and dead skin cells that normal shampooing often
misses. This step uses specialized products and techniques to detoxify the scalp.
The Massage: You will receive a comprehensive massage focusing on your scalp, head, neck, and shoulders, as well as your arms and hands, to release deep tension, improve blood circulation, and promote overall stress relief.
Nourishment & Finishing
Scalp Elixir & Hair Mask: A
nourishing treatment or scalp elixir will be applied to replenish moisture and
soothe the scalp. A hair mask will then be applied to your strands to
condition, hydrate, and restore luster.
Steam Treatment: Steam is often
used to open the hair follicles and pores,
allowing the nourishing ingredients from the scalp elixir
and hair mask to penetrate more effectively.
Finishing: Your hair will be
thoroughly rinsed and conditioned. Our focus is on ensuring your hair is clean
and treated. You may choose to use our provided handheld blow-dryer or relax in
our comfortable chair, sipping tea under a stationary halo hair dryer.
